In this context, it is pertinent to mention that the 21st February commemorates the Bengali Language Movement in 1952. The UNESCO General Assembly proclaimed the 21st February as the IMLD in November 1999, and in May 2009, the UN General Assembly called
upon the member states “to promote the preservation and protection of all languages used by people of the world”.
