A Letter from Ottawa, Canada (On Black Mental Health)

It is true that Black men often struggle to seek help from psychologists and psychiatrists because mental health issues, especially depression, are still taboo in many communities. Seeking help can be seen as a weakness. However, as a Black clinical psychologist, I have seen that many more Black men would seek support if their experiences were understood, their anger was acknowledged, and discussions about racism did not make professionals uncomfortable. They need care that is culturally appropriate and anti-racist, along with being treated with humanity, respect, and dignity.
