Canada’s Private Sponsorship Model Represents a Complementary Pathway for Refugee Resettlement

Canada currently has three programs for refugee resettlement: the Government Assisted Refugee (GAR) program, the Private Sponsorship of Refugees (PSR) program, and the Blended Visa-Office Referred (BVOR) program. In the PSR and BVOR programs, small groups of Canadians help sponsor refugees for resettlement. These sponsorship programs were established in 1976 and 2013. Together, they have facilitated more than 368,000 refugee sponsorships. This makes up about 48 percent of all refugees resettled to Canada since the late 1970s.
