This research studies immigrants and racialized people looking for jobs in Ottawa’s francophone minority context. Based on semi-structured interviews, it reveals several key points: French can lead to discrimination in Ottawa’s mostly English-speaking environment.
Accents and written communication can cause stigma and discrimination within the Francophone community. Accents can mark race or identify people as immigrants. There can also be negative judgment from one’s own ethnic community when someone adopts the accent and expressions of the dominant group.
