This report looks at the immigrant population in the Ottawa-Gatineau metropolitan area. It focuses on the labor market and earnings of women and men who have recently settled in Canada. Information from the 2016 Canadian census shows the complexity of the immigrant population and their economic activities.
The Ottawa-Gatineau area is unique in several ways: it is divided between two provinces, has almost no manufacturing, has high median earnings, and the federal government is the largest industry. This report provides a snapshot of immigrants’ socio-economic and employment status in a service-dominated urban economy with special challenges from the federal government.
