Ottawa Through the Eyes of Refugee Children

The goal of this research was to understand the experiences of refugee children arriving in Canada. I collected drawings from thirteen recently arrived refugee children living in a transitional house in downtown Ottawa, Ontario. The children were asked to draw their experiences of arriving in Canada. Nine of the thirteen drawings showed a journey with flags and different types of transportation. Five children drew themselves, showing their feelings about arriving in Canada. Six drawings showed positive emotions, with children expressing thankfulness or eagerness. Four drawings had unclear tones, suggesting neutrality or avoidance of the task.
