The global refugee protection system has faced more pressure in recent years. The gap between the number of people forced from their homes and the solutions available to help them continues to grow. By the end of 2020, there were 20.7 million refugees under the UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency. The number of resettlement places offered by countries each year is consistently below what is needed. However, there have been some promising developments. As the need for humanitarian protection has increased, countries have been creative in designing resettlement programs. They have also found ways to help people in need through education and employment visa programs.
