The Making of a Model Refugee: Refugee Resettlement and Employment Services in Ottawa, ON

Participation in the labor market is seen as an important step in resettlement and integration. As a result, employment services have become key places for shaping newcomers into self-reliant citizens. This thesis draws on fieldwork and semi-structured, in-depth interviews that focus on the experiences of highly professional and educated refugees. Some of these refugees have even become service providers themselves. It examines the complex role that employment services play in refugee resettlement.
