Bias, whether conscious or unconscious, favors certain people in the hiring process based on superficial characteristics like name and place of education that have nothing to do with their talent or potential. Bias puts limits on many forms of diversity. Gender and ethnicity are notable examples. This discussion focuses on the diversity that comes from immigration – the fact that Matthew is more likely to get called in for an interview than Samir, even if their qualifications and experience are identical. This is bad for immigrants who are disproportionately under-employed in both Canada and the U.S. in jobs below their skills and qualifications. And it doesn’t work for employers, whose current systems do not bring the best and brightest into their workforce.

This webinar will dive deeper to understand how and why unconscious bias occurs. It will explore practical solutions being tested in the workplace to disrupt hiring bias.

Speakers:

Phil Oreopoulos, Professor, University of Toronto, co-author of the study “Why do some employers prefer to interview Matthew but not Samir?”
