This seminar presents what we learned from a community-university research partnership studying immigrants’ volunteering in Canada. The partnership between the Catholic Centre for Immigrants and the University of Ottawa’s E=MC2 (Engagement equals Mobilizing Communities and Collaboration) research team aims to derive best practices that demonstrate how community engagement can assist with the settlement and increase the resilience of immigrants in Canada.

In this seminar, we will discuss:

a)      immigrants’ experiences with volunteering in Canada;

b)      the importance of early social connection between recent immigrants and long-term residents of the community; and

c)       how to make community-university research partnership work effectively.

This seminar is for researchers, practitioners and members of the general public who are interested in creating a welcoming and resilient community.

This research project was funded by the Employment and Social Development Canada, and the University of Ottawa. Participants will be Lucila Spigelblatt, Deputy Executive Director, CCI ; An Gie Yong, PhD candidate in Psychology, University of Ottawa; and Caroline Andrew, Director, Centre on Governance – University of Ottawa.
