Chinese Canadian Stories Kiosk at the Ottawa Public Library

August 28, 2012

The Ottawa Public Library (OPL) is a great place for newcomers to learn about Canada and Canadians from many backgrounds.

OPL will be displaying an interactive trilingual Chinese Canadian Stories Kiosk, received from the University of British Columbia (UBC), at Nepean Centrepointe branch until mid-May 2013. OPL is proud to be the first to display the mobile kiosk outside of Vancouver, BC. The kiosk will travel to other Canadian libraries and venues after OPL.

The mobile kiosk was part of a UBC and Simon Fraser University project called “Chinese Canadian Stories” – a web-portal and electronic resources that would be the first stop for anyone interested in Chinese Canadian history.

Users will find visually powerful narratives in English, French and Chinese, including stories of Chinese Canadian sports heroes, the Miss Chinatown beauty pageant, the history of Chinese-First Nations marriages and families, and Chinese Canadian veterans whose bravery helped win the right to vote.

If you would like to learn more about Chinese-Canadian history, culture and people, check out the Chinese Canadian Stories Booklist.

The kiosk is hosted by OPL’s Diversity and Accessibility Division, which provides specialized services in the areas of accessibility, diversity, volunteers, bookmobile services and homebound services.
