Despite Canada’s universal healthcare system, Canadians of African Descent (CAD) still face many problems that put them at higher risk during pandemics like COVID-19. They struggle as frontline workers and deal with pre-existing conditions like diabetes. These issues can worsen their health outcomes. This situation needs more attention on the specific needs of CAD, who may be at greater risk of late diagnosis and delayed treatment for COVID-19. Historically marginalized communities, like CAD, must be included in healthcare planning to avoid being left behind during and after the crisis. Past evidence shows that structural inequities affect who suffers from disease and its economic effects. Therefore, the unique needs of CAD must be part of healthcare planning in the ongoing COVID-19 response.
