Dr. Josephine Etowa, Professor, University of Ottawa’s Faculty of Health Sciences and Loyer DaSilva Research Chair in Public Health Nursing

Josephine Etowa is a Full Professor and Loyer-DaSilva Research Chair in Public Health Nursing in the Faculty of Health Sciences at the University of Ottawa. She is a senior Investigator with the Nursing Best Practice Research Centre at the University of Ottawa, and a founding member and past president of the Health Association of African Canadians.

Josephine is a member of the College of Reviewers of the Canadian Institute of Health Research (CIHR) and a Board of Director for the Stephen Lewis Foundation for HIV/AIDS in Africa. Her research is grounded in over 25 years of clinical practice in perinatal health care with projects funded by local, national and international funding organizations.

She was an investigator for an International Development Research Centre funded, five-year, five-country research program to strengthen nurses’ capacity for HIV/AIDs research and policy development in sub-Saharan Africa and the Caribbean.

Josephine is currently a co-Principal Investigator for a CIHR funded, five-year provincial program of research examining HIV vulnerability and resilience among African, Caribbean and Black heterosexual men in Ontario (nicknamed, weSpeak). She is also a nominated Principal Investigator for a CIHR funded three-year, three-country study, currently investigating infant feeding practices among African, Caribbean and Black women living with HIV/AIDs in Ottawa, Port Harcourt (Nigeria) and Miami (USA).
