This event involves an interactive dialogue around dismantling myths about newcomers, along with an overview of newcomers’ journey from their country of origin to their new home, from a unique perspective. It will touch on the various systemic challenges that newcomers are faced with upon arrival, focus on the role that social determinants of health play during the settlement process, and the importance of advocacy when it comes to addressing and removing barriers. The session includes a tour of Somerset West Community Health Centre’s Ottawa Newcomer Health Centre and Catholic Centre for Immigrants Client Support Services program, whose staff strive to create welcoming environment by providing timely and culturally appropriate care to newcomers.
