A record number of people are crossing into Canada from the US at small border towns rather than official ports of entry to seek asylum for a chance to build a new life. This panel will demystify the situation at the Canada-US border and explain why the crossings are not “illegal,” and why “irregular” is a more accurate word. The panelists will explain the Safe Third Country Agreement between the US and Canada which drives people to seek asylum through irregular routes, why so many people are leaving the US for Canada, and why it should not be designated a “safe third country.” The event will also explore ways Ottawa can support those seeking safety in Canada.
